Roland is doing absolutely great! He quickly secured a place in all of our hearts and lives. When “Rolie” arrived we had just lost our beloved black lab, Maggie, after a long battle with cancer. She was the most obedient and loving dog to our 8 year-old son, that we never thought that he would recover from he passing. While he still misses Maggie, Rolie has helped to ease the pain and fill the space beside Jonas when he plays in the yard, as Rolie is always at his side.
My husband, Doug, is also smitten with Rolie as he has decided that forever more he is a “bassett man.” Roland snuggles up between Doug and I nightly and has become the ideal sleeping dog. Often I awake in the middle of the night to find them snuggling with arms and paws wrapped around each other in an innocent nocturnal embrace.
The other two hounds have fully “adopted” Rolie as one of the pack and even allow him to believe that he is the alpha from time to time. Our foxhound, Penny, is especially fond of his nightly ear cleanings. Even the two cats have accepted him. We were somewhat leary of how he would react to the cats, as in the description it said “no cats,” but it turns out that he was just cautiously curious about them. He did this hysterically funny dance with them chuffing and scraping his front paw like a bull for a few days, but the cats simply laughed at him and continued on their way. The little one, Lola, is quite fond of sleeping beside him in bed now!
As for myself, I can hardly remember life without him. As I write this, he is gently resting on the couch beside me. While we all cried when we unpacked Maggie’s Christmas ornament last week, we promptly went and found a bassett hound ornament with his name on it to add to the tree. We are all grateful to your organization for providing Roland with a temporary home until he was able to find us. He is a blessing and a daily gift. As a former foster parent , I know how much of your heart goes into helping these animals, and I truly appreciate your giving nature and commitment to keeping all animals safe.
